Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) continues its tradition of recognizing a true friend, Tim Russert. A true advocate for youth, Tim served on the BGCGW Board of Directors for 13 years—and through his leadership—raised hundred of thousands of dollars, as emcee of the Dinner to support BGCGW’s world-class programs in education, technology, diversity and career exploration. Tim’s son, Luke Russert, has embraced charitable causes championed by his late father and we are delighted he will serve as our Master of Ceremonies.
The first Congressional Dinner, held in 1986 to commemorate Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington’s 100th anniversary, was created as an opportunity to pay tribute to local and national leaders who have demonstrated a strong commitment to giving our children and our country a better and brighter future. Now after 26 years, this dinner has truly become a premier event in Washington, raising vital financial support for one of the area’s most respected youth organizations.
Past honorees have included such notables as General Colin Powell, Vice President Al Gore, HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson, Abe Pollin, Mario Morino, Congressman Tom Davis, Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Senator Orrin Hatch, Dr. William J. Bennett, Steve & Jean Case and James Kimsey of AOL, Richard Marriott, Russ Ramsey, Paul Tagliabue, Elaine Chao, Donald Graham, Richard Syron, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, Congressman Chris Van Hollen, James Cornelius of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Christopher Viehbacher of GlaxoSmithKline, Samuel Bodman, Secretary of the Department of Energy, Evan & Cindy Jones, Senator Charles Schumer (D) New York, James DeGraffenreidt, Jr., of Washington Gas and WGL Holdings, Inc., Jeff Zucker of NBC Universal, Rynthia Rost of GEICO, Senator Susan Collins (R) Maine, House Majority Leader, and Steny H. Hoyer (D) Maryland.
As we celebrate BGCGW’s achievements over the past 125 years, we proudly look forward to the future and continue to acknowledge their significant contributions to youth and to Boys & Girls Clubs across the United States.
