A Celebration for the Nation
The Safeway Barbecue Battle, coming up June 26 & 27, is an annual barbecue blowout signaling the
beginning of summer fun on a mile-long stretch of majestic Pennsylvania Avenue. This unique event,
one of Washingtonís largest annual food and music festivals, will once again bring many of Americasí
favorite pastimes together in a celebration of food, music, community and family fun. Along with all
the great bbq and attractions offered to tens of thousands of attendees each year, the BBQ Battle also
hosts scores of the nationís best barbecue teams cooking-off for over $40,000 in cash and prizes in the
National Barbecue Championship contest over the weekend. Both Kansas City (KCBS) and Memphis
Pork (MIM-style) contests are featured, as well as a special Rancherís Reserve contest for best beef,
with top teams from around the country cooking off all weekend on Pennsylvania Avenue in the
shadow of the Capitol Building.
The Safeway Barbecue Battle is also the largest annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs in
Washington and has raised well over one million dollars for this vital DC organization in past years.
Donít miss the popular Safeway Sampling Pavilion, featuring plenty of tasty free food samples served
up in style, along with a roster of celebrity chefs and on-going cooking entertainment on multiple
demonstration stages. Top barbecue restaurants and caterers from across the country offer every kind
of mouth-watering barbecue, and attendees can vote for their favorite cue in the Peopleís Choice
contest.
Nothing goes better with delicious bbq than lots of great rock, reggae, R&B, jazz and blues and the
Safeway Barbecue Battle serves up 30 popular bands on three stages throughout the event weekend
including Washingtonís own Chuck Brown, Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers, Motherís Finest,
Parrot Beach and many more great bands on 3 stages. Exciting interactive exhibits offer fun for all
with sports entertainment, childrenís activities, prizes and more to round out the family fun!
Itís no wonder the Safeway Barbecue Battle has garnered accolades including being named a ìTop
10 BBQ Eventî by The Travel Channel and Discovery.com, and has been covered extensively on
national and international television, radio, print and online media. Admission is just $10 for adults, $5
for kids 6-12, and children under 5 enter free.
