EDUCATION INITIATIVE:

Outcomes
80% improved standardized test scores in reading and mathematics
100% were promoted to the next grade level and/or graduated from high school
Overview
An intensive after-school academic remediation and intervention program targeted at children who are performing below their age appropriate grade levels in reading and mathematics. The program was designed to aid in improving reading, mathematics and test-taking skills. Two-hundred thirty youth at three branches in Washington, DC and Silver Spring, MD, participated in the program led by teachers certified in reading and mathematics.

PROJECT LEARN EDUCATIONAL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM:

Outcomes
85% improved grades
96% were promoted to the next grade level and/or graduated from high school
Overview
Boys & Girls Clubs of America's research-based program strategy that incorporates high-yield learning activities in the Clubs' daily program schedule. Project Learn activities are designed to reinforce and enhance the skills and knowledge young people learn at school in an after-school setting. The program impacted a total of 130 kids at the Eastern, Merritt School and Ballou High School Branches.

SMART MOVES PROGRAM
(Skills Resistance and Resistance Training):


Outcomes
87% decreased favorable attitudes towards alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATODS)
93% increased their knowledge of the risks associated with ATODS use/abuse
89% improved refusal and resistance skills
90% decreased their association with peers using drugs
91% abstained from drug/substance use during the program cycle
Overview
Boys & Girls Clubs of America's nationally acclaimed primary prevention program designed to help young people resist alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity. The curriculum-based program was implemented for a target group of 60 high-risk youth, ages 12-18, at four branches in Washington, DC.

SMART LEADERS PROGRAM:

Overview
Center for Substance Abuse Prevention model program and one of Boys & Girls Clubs of America's SMART Moves family of prevention programs. This program targets older teens and includes a youth peer leadership component. Like SMART Moves, it is designed to help young people resist alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, as well as premature sexual activity. The program was implemented for a target group of 30 high-risk youth, ages 14-18, at the Eastern and Ballou High School Branches.

TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION PROGRAM:

Outcomes
93% increased their attitudes towards importance of safe sex practices
95% increased their knowledge of the emotional, financial and social consequences of teen parenting
98% disliked the simulated parenting experience and agreed that parenting should be delayed until adulthood
70% increased their communication with their parents on teen sexuality issues
0.4% of youth participants became pregnant during their program involvement
Overview
BGCGW implemented teen pregnancy prevention program for 75 low-income 6th and 7th graders at four Clubs in Washington, DC. Teen pregnancy prevention services included nationally acclaimed curriculum-based sexual education programs designed to promote abstinence as a primary means of preventing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Programs include SMART Girls, Wise Guys Male Responsibility and Planned Parenthood Middle School programs, case management services and a parental involvement component. The program was reinforced through the use of Baby Think It OverTM dolls, infant simulators providing a reasonably realistic simulation of teen parenting.
