The history of Boys
& Girls Clubs of Greater Washington dates back to 1886 when
the Newsboys and Children's Aid Society was established in Northwest
Washington. In the early 1900s the Working Boys Home and Aide Association
replaced this organization and enlarged the scope of service to
the boys in that neighborhood.
With the sponsorship and assistance of the Rotary Club of Washington,
D.C., a new board of trustees was established and the name changed
to Boys Clubs of Washington. In 1973, Boys Clubs of Washington began
serving girls as full and equal members. In July of 1981, Boys Clubs
of Washington changed its name to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater
Washington to reflect its new direction.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington is one of the largest
affiliates of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. We have been serving
youth for over 120 years. Our Clubs are designed to meet the needs
of the communities we serve: in a sense they are a reflection of
you!
From public schools to public housing, Clubs throughout the metropolitan
area come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are full-service,
self-sustaining facilities; some operate out of two-plus bedroom
apartments in public housing complexes; and some share space with
high schools and elementary schools.
The opportunities we give young people allow them to dream again.
Our staff, supported by a dedicated group of volunteers, show kids
how to turn those dreams into a reality through planning, education
and hard work.
